How to connect WhatsApp to your Shopify store, and what the agent can answer from your catalog

Short answer: there are two ways. The simplest is a WhatsApp button on your store with a wa.me link: it opens the chat, but someone still has to answer and look up every price by hand. The other is to connect your WhatsApp Business number and your Shopify store to an agent, which answers on its own with your catalog’s real prices and stock, tells each customer where their order is and can send them a checkout link. In Super Agent those are two connections in the console, and neither needs a developer.

A button is not a connection

Most WhatsApp messages an online store gets are the same handful: “do you have it in my size?”, “how much is it?”, “has my order shipped?”. The answers are already in Shopify. The trouble is that whoever replies has to open the admin, find the product or the order, and come back to the chat, while the customer waits.

Most stores want both: the button starts the conversation and the connection answers it.

Step by step: connecting WhatsApp and Shopify in Super Agent

  1. Create your agent. Enter your website address and Super Agent reads it to write the first agent, with your hours, policies and tone.
  2. Connect WhatsApp Business. In Integrations, click “Connect WhatsApp Business”. Meta’s window opens and you pick the WhatsApp Business account and the number the agent will answer on. Nothing is connected until you finish there.
  3. Connect Shopify. On the Shopify card, type your store address (yourstore.myshopify.com) and Shopify asks you to approve access. If you have already created your own app in Shopify’s Dev Dashboard, you can use it instead: the console shows the exact values to paste into it.
  4. Let the import run. On connecting, Super Agent imports your customers, orders and abandoned carts, and the card shows its progress. That import is what lets the agent recognize a customer by their phone number.
  5. Choose what the agent may do. In the agent’s settings, turn on its store tools: looking up Shopify products, looking up this customer’s Shopify order, and creating a checkout link.
  6. Put the button on your store. Build a wa.me link to your number with the WhatsApp link generator with UTM tracking and add it to your product pages, your store footer or your Instagram bio.

An example: size, price and a checkout link

A clothing store with its shop connected. A customer writes in from the button on a product page (the products and prices are made up for the example):

CustomerHi, do you have the basic black tee in a medium?

AgentHi! Yes, the basic black tee is in stock in medium. It’s $24. Would you like me to put together a checkout link?

CustomerYes, two please.

AgentDone, here is your checkout link for two tees in medium. The store works out the total when you open it.

Behind those replies, the agent searched your catalog for the product, read its variants (size and colour) with their stock, and created the checkout link with the exact variant and quantity. There is no hand-copied list: if the medium sold out tomorrow, the same lookup would show it.

What the agent can look up, and what it cannot

The catalog, live

To answer “do you have it?”, “how much?” or “what sizes are there?”, the agent reads your Shopify products (title, price, total stock and image), the variants of one product with each one’s stock, and your store’s stock locations. That lookup only reads: it cannot change anything in your store, and it cannot read orders, customers or carts.

The order of the person asking, and nobody else’s

When a customer asks “where is my order?”, the agent does not ask for an email or an order number. It recognizes them by the phone number they are writing from, matched against the customers imported from Shopify, and it can only see that person’s orders: payment status, fulfillment status, what they bought, and the carrier and tracking number once it has shipped.

That is deliberate. Shopify numbers orders in sequence (#1001, #1002…), so a tool that accepted any order number would let a stranger count upward and read other customers’ names, phone numbers and addresses. If the agent finds no orders for that number, it says so and offers to hand the conversation to a person. And if the order import has not finished yet, it says it cannot check, rather than telling the customer they have no orders.

A checkout link that never touches your prices

The checkout link is a Shopify draft order with the variant and quantity the customer asked for. The agent cannot set a price or a discount, because Shopify prices the basket, and the draft only becomes an order when the customer pays. If they do not pay, nothing happens.

When the person writing is you

When you write in as the owner, the agent can also look up the store’s orders, customers and abandoned carts. Those lookups are never available to your customers.

Knowing which sales came from WhatsApp

The links to your store that the agent shares carry utm_source=superagent and the conversation’s channel, which is how Super Agent can count the orders that came from a conversation. For your own buttons and posts, use the UTM link generator: an untagged link is a sale nobody can trace.

Before you connect

With the store connected, the usual next step is recovering abandoned carts on WhatsApp, which works from the same carts you just imported.
